Ubuntu: Install Clam Antivirus

Most of us have heard that GNU/Linux Distros are currently safe from virus attack unlike the Windows OS. Then why would anyone need to install an Anti-Virus Software on their Linux machine? In this article i would like to show you how to install one using terminal console in Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala.

Clam AntiVirus

Clam Antivirus

One reasons that I could think of as off for now. I for myself don’t want to unintentionally distribute viruses to all my friends and colleagues and of course NOT to all my clients. For that would decrease my credibility as a Computer Technician and an IT Entrepreneur.

Simple step to install Clam AV using the console. (However, it took almost 2 hours on my machine since I was also downloading 2-3 more applications simultaneously)

1. From the Upper Gnome Panel. Go to Applications > Accessories >> Terminal
2. To install you need to type sudo apt-get install clamtk
From here, the installation will be done automatically. Minimize your Terminal and you are free to do anything else except Restart the machine :P
3. Do you want to continue [Y/n]? Answer Y.
4. The last thing I did was trying to update the AV using the command sudo freshclam ,but guest what? Its allready been taken care off automatically.

Clamtk 4.15

Clamtk 4.15 install

Your new Clam AV can be access from, Applications > System Tools >> Virus Scanner. During your 1st time running the Virus Scanner please choose Single User and Save. The Anti-virus is now ready for use. have a nice try :)

No matter what others say, I think it is still interesting and useful maybe necessary to improve some minor things
